Another outbreak?
KANO State government has linked the outbreak of a strange killer-disease in Dungurawa village, Dawakin local government to cerebrospinal meningitis,CSM
So far no fewer than 8 persons have been confirmed dead in the village within seven days after multiple symptoms of high fever, headache and stomach pains. Briefing Reporters on the latest development, Kano state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabir Ibrahim Getso, said that outcome of laboratory investigation confirmed the victims died of CSM. Apart from those eight persons killed, the Commissioner hinted that investigation by the emergency respond team confirmed additional six cases with similar symptoms already hospitalised at the primary health facility in the community. He said, “ the findings of our investigation revealed that the deceased persons had high grade of fever, vomiting and convulsions. Between 15th and 25th, seven cases died most of which are closely related. The first index case developed first symptoms on 15th and died same day. “ Speaking further, Getso said “the result of laboratory test on the additional cases showed that they are afflicted by Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) type A. Additional cases are receiving adequate care in our health facilities.” The Commissioner noted that consultation with Federal ministry of health and development partners was in top gear to source for vaccine. Although, Kabiru declined to categorically tell when the vaccine would arrive Kano, he maintained that “ it will take three quarters of amount of national budget to procure CSM vaccine to the whole nation”. “ To curtail the spread of the disease, government has strengthened and intensifies surveillance at all levels of health care delivery, strengthening the laboratory capacity of the state epidemiology lab to diagnose CSM, activated the Rapid Response Team that will respond to reported cases of Meningitis.
